In lieu of the awful home opener by the Phils, the Flyers were able to lift the spirits of The City of Brotherly Love by clinching a playoff spot. With 3 games left in the regular season, the Flyers clinched a spot in the playoffs by defeating the Florida Panthers in a 5 to 2 victory.
The game started slow, with the Flyers failing to take the lead with 3 power plays and a two-man advantage, failing to even get off decent shots. The Flyers picked it up in the second period, with a goal by Vinny Lecavalier, marking his 20th goal of the season. Lecavalier became the 7th on the team to score 20 goals this season, along with Giroux (27), Simmonds(26), Voracheck (21), Read (21), Hartnell (20), and Schenn (20).
Later in the second period, Giroux had a burst of energy, firing up the team, looking like the team we want to see in the playoffs. He scored once in the later half of the second period, and again just about 2 minutes later, giving the Flyers a 3-0 lead. Then Couturier scored with just under 5 minutes left in the period, leading the Flyers with a 4 goal lead heading into the final period.
The Panthers came out firing in the third period, scoring two goals on Steve Mason, who had an impressive 38 saves against them. But McGinn solidified the win by scoring the 5th goal for the Flyers late in the final period.Giroux, who told the media at the beginning of what looked like a dreadful season, that they will make the playoffs, and the captain helped lead his team to their sixth playoff appearance in 7 seasons. In the next 3 games the Flyers have, they have the chance, depending on how the Rangers fair in their 2 final games, to clinch home field advantage by securing the 2 place spot in the Metropolitan Division.
